DVWS 701 - Wesleyan History and Doctrine (3) The purpose of this class is to introduce students to Wesleyan history and doctrine with an emphasis on the continuing reception of John and Charles Wesley. Attention will be given to the origins and spread of the Wesleyan tradition and the emerging ecclesial families that now comprise a global movement. Defining doctrines will be studied to understand their binding significance for Wesleyans within the Triune faith of the Church catholic. Emphasis will be placed on the Trinity, the Scripture way of salvation, sanctification, holiness–both personal and social, and Christian perfection. John Wesley’s sermons and Charles Wesley’s hymns will be primary sources for this work that will highlight the content and form of “practical divinity.” Prereq: DVHD 501 .
