This course will provide doctoral students with grounding in the domains of foundational knowledge of public health as stipulated by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). This will include the history, philosophy, and values of public health; core functions and essential services of public health; describing and assessing a population’s health; causes and trends of morbidity and mortality in the US and globally; prevention science and the importance of evidence in population health; social, behavioral, environmental, and biological health determinants and their contributions to health inequities; globalization and global burdens of disease; and the connections among human health, animal health, and ecosystem health.
