Secondary Education Major (B.S.E.)

The secondary education major is a Class B teacher certification program. Students in this major must choose a content area and take all required courses to meet state certification qualifications. Students also have the option of pursuing a second major. All electives must be directed by the advisor.

General Education - Distribution Areas: 23-27 Credits

General Education Requirements will varying depending on the chosen content area:

Natural and Computational Sciences (8)
Content Area: Biology - Take CHEM 108 , CHEM 109 , & PHYS 101
Content Area: Social Studies - Take GEOG 150 plus one more Nat/Comp Science
All others: Choose two courses from the Gen Ed List
Social Sciences (4-8)
Content Area: English - Take JMC 200
Content Area: Social Studies - Take ECON 201 & POLS 200
All others: Choose one course from the following:
ECON 201 , GEOG 101 , JMC 200 , POLS 200 , PSYC 101 , or SOCI 100
Mathematics (4)
Choose one course from the Gen Ed List
Fine Arts: SOA 200 (3)
Humanities (4)
Content Area: English - Take ENGL 205
All others: Choose one course from the Gen Ed List

Secondary Education Major (BSE): 34 Credits

Professional Courses: 8 Credits

*These are the only courses that can be taken prior to unconditional admittance.

Education Core: 11 Credits

(choose one of the following pedagogy courses based on the chosen content area)

Student Teaching/Internships: 12 Credits

Required State-Approved Content Classes: 44-52 Credits**

Content Area: Complete all required courses in one of the following content areas:

Biology, English, French, German, History, Mathematics, Social Studies, Spanish

and/or

Directed Electives: Required content classes/electives, as directed by an Education Advisor. Electives are for state certification requirements.

GPA NOTE: A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required.
