The Department of Philosophy offers a major in philosophy, plus a major combining philosophy and religion. Both majors earn the bachelor of arts degree. In addition, the department offers an interdisciplinary major in science and religion that leads to the bachelor of science degree.

The department also offers minors in medical ethics and philosophy, as well as an interdisciplinary minor in science and religion.


General Education: University Core Curriculum and Distribution Requirements

See University Core Curriculum and General Education Requirements  in the Howard College of Arts and Sciences introductory pages for a list of required and applicable courses.

Students majoring in philosophy or philosophy and religion, as well as students minoring in philosophy, can use PHIL 241 (Introduction to Philosophy)  or PHIL 200 (Christian Ethics) /BREL 200 (Christian Ethics)  to satisfy the general education humanities requirement or they can use one of them as a requirement for the major/minor, but not for both requirements. Medical ethics minors may count PHIL 230 (Medical Ethics)  towards both requirements. Science and religion majors must take BREL 201 (Introduction to World Religions)  to satisfy the general education humanities requirement.
